People Incorporated has a new set of Core Values. In this continuing series, our President and CEO explores the second value of “Excellence.”
I doubt that any of us get up in the morning to start our days and think, “I want to just do an ok job today.” Whether we realize it or not, being good at something is a source of pride and makes life more enjoyable. To be sure, we all have good days and bad days, but I don’t believe that anyone wants to be known for just being “ok” at their job.
As a Core Value, Excellence ties in directly with Progress. My last post highlighted how valuing progress means, among other things, that we should always be working to improve; that we should strive to make each day better than the last to keep moving the needle a little at a time until we get where we need to be.
People Inc. has earned a reputation for being a high performing organization over its nearly 60 years of service to the people and communities that we serve. This did not happen by accident, but through a commitment to pursuing excellence in all that we do. In other words, we keep progressing so we can achieve excellence, and that’s why excellence is vital to our culture and leads to our commitment to delivering exceptional results.
EXCELLENCE: We aspire to always do our best for our colleagues, clients, and communities. Details, thoughtfulness, wholeheartedness, and follow through matter. We accept responsibility for our actions and work together to preserve and grow the resources entrusted to us.
Excellence is an attitude, a continuous pursuit, and a commitment to doing our best in any given situation. As a parent, I have lost count of the number of times that I have told my daughters after a failure that it’s ok, so long as they did their best. After all, nobody (and no organization) is perfect. That’s why I speak about helping People Inc. to be the best that it can be. Excellence isn’t about being perfect, it’s about consistently doing the things that are necessary to achieve better results. By always working to improve, we can collectively keep raising the bar for ourselves, and this is what will produce greater impact for our clients and communities.
Our pursuit of excellence plays out in a few ways:
- Commitment to Quality
At People Inc., we should be dedicated to delivering excellence in everything that we do. From our interactions with our coworkers, to delivering services to our clients, to working with our community partners, quality must be our top priority.
- Customer First Approach
No matter what your title is at People Inc. is, we are all in the business of helping people. We must understand that providing outstanding experiences, services and exceeding expectations is important to our success. By consistently delivering exceptional services and support, we build trust, loyalty, and long-term partnerships that allow us to create value and positively impact the lives of those we serve.
- Striving for Operational Excellence
Achieving operational excellence is key to our ability to continue growing as an organization and achieving greater success. By continuously improving our processes, systems, and efficiency, we can better assure that we are performing at a high level and consistently deliver quality services.
- Building High-Performing Teams
Excellence is a collective effort, and our success is only possible when we work together as a team. We should strive to attract, develop, and retain top talent who embody the values of excellence, passion, and a strong work ethic. By creating a supportive environment that encourages collaboration, empowerment, and recognition, we will be able to better nurture employees who are committed to delivering their best and push the boundaries of what we are able to achieve.
- Inspiring Leadership
People Inc.’s commitment to excellence and long history of success means that we are a leader among other nonprofit organizations. We should drive positive change, and help shape the future of the individuals, families, and communities that we serve. Our commitment to excellence allows us to inspire and influence others, fostering growth and advancement not only within our organization but throughout our communities.
