Small Business Loan Helps Local Musician Open Rehearsal Venue

Daniel Kelly II, a music instructor from Winchester, Virginia, has always had a deep passion for music. Little did he know that this passion would lead him to a successful small business venture. During his time as a drum set artist and jazz studies major in college, he often was met with a lack of rehearsal space. The issue extended beyond his own experience and affected many musicians in the Winchester area.

Driven by the desire to provide a solution, Kelly discovered an empty warehouse in downtown Winchester. Determined to turn it into a fully functional rehearsal and recording space for local musicians, he embarked on an extensive renovation project. However, bringing his vision to life required a substantial amount of capital. That’s when Kelly was directed to People Inc.’s small business loan program through a trusted partner organization.

Kelly utilized a $15,000 loan from People Inc. to carry out the essential renovations, which included painting the floor, installing new insulation, drywall, electricity, ADA compliant toilets and sinks, and upgrading fixtures and door handles.

In May, Daniel’s hard work and dedication paid off as he opened the doors of Drum Orpheum Rehearsal Hall to the local music community. Since then, the reception has been outstanding. Offering the most affordable rates in a 185-mile radius, the rehearsal hall has already been utilized by three bands. In fact, one band even recorded their latest album within the space.

People Inc. catered to me better than any of the other companies I worked with,” said Kelly. “They actually care about the process that the client is going through.” Kelly’s lender from People Inc. was there with him from start to finish and provided education about the loan process, as well as business advice for the entrepreneur.

Drum Orpheum Rehearsal Hall has ambitious plans for the future. Phase II of the project involves expanding their outreach and hosting live events. Additionally, Kelly aims to establish a quarterly networking event at the hall, fostering connections within the musician and artist community. The pinnacle of his plans is a musician/artist gala, showcasing the exceptional talents that Drum Orpheum Rehearsal Hall has facilitated and nurtured.

I’m grateful and excited to see it come to fruition finally,” said Kelly.
