How does free tax preparation work?
Tax time doesn’t have to be stressful! Trained volunteers provide free income tax preparation assistance to qualifying individuals and help eligible individuals claim the tax credits they qualify for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
This year, tax preparation services will be available early February through mid-April 2026. Services will be offered both in-person, where available, and online.

Who is eligible for free tax preparation?
You are eligible for free tax preparation if you meet one of the following criteria:
- Make less than $89,000 annually
- Have a disability
- Speak limited English
- Other qualifying criteria (call 276-619-2235 with questions)
How do I make an appointment?
- Call (276) 619-2235 to connect with a tax coach
- Assistance is available both in person and virtually, based on your location and availability
- Tax coaches will help you securely submit documents and guide you through the process
- Taxpayers also may visit the IRS Free Tax Prep locator to find nearby VITA options.
