People Incorporated receives a $24,000 grant to provide free tax prep

People Incorporated recently received a $24,000 grant from the Virginia Community Action Partnership (VACAP) to provide free income tax preparation services across its Community Action service area. The agency trains volunteers to provide this service to community members making $67,000 a year or less.

“On behalf of our staff and volunteers working with the VITA program, we are pleased to accept this $24,000 grant award” said Bryan Phipps, President and CEO of People Inc. “As one of 19 grantees across the Commonwealth, we will be able to continue to provide opportunities for taxpayers to receive the tax credits they’ve earned.”

Funding was provided through the Virginia CASH Campaign, a program of VACAP. The campaign provides opportunities for taxpayers to file both federal and state tax returns, claim valuable credits like the federal Child Tax Credit (CTC) and both federal and state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Beyond preparing tax returns, volunteers also connect community members with financial empowerment opportunities, like access to financial literacy and education.

Last filing season, People Inc. provided over 200 community members with this free service. Across Virginia over 19,700 returns were filed with the program, bringing in over $20 million in refunds to communities across Virginia.

Services are provided by People Inc. volunteers from Feb. 1 to April 15 and are offered both in-person and online. Call 276-619-2235 or email volunteer@peopleinc.net to make an appointment.
