Local community member honored with annual volunteer award

People Incorporated recently presented Buckey Boone with the agency’s Henderson Award for his significant contributions to people through his community and volunteer work.

Boone currently serves as the co-chair of the Appalachian Peace Education Center, where he leads the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration, as well as other initiatives. Boone also serves on a Washington County committee and the Virginia State Board of Social Services, where he has been a tireless voice for expanded childcare and early childhood development opportunities.

“Since his retirement, Buckey has remained active in significant volunteer activities,” said People Incorporated President and CEO Rob Goldsmith. “Through his work, Buckey is making his community, the commonwealth and the world a better place for all people.”

The Henderson Award is named after Fount Henderson, chairperson of the first People Inc. board of directors and his wife, Thelma, who worked tirelessly to advance the agency’s mission in their community.

“I am really proud to be linked with the Henderson family who, 56 years ago, had not just the vision, but the energy and interest to improve their own community,” said Boone. “I am really proud to have received this award and, the part that makes me most proud, is that it gives me one more connection to People Incorporated.”

Over his nearly 50-year career, Boone served as founding director of Smart Beginnings of Southwest Virginia; as director of development for Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society; as the inaugural director of the Washington County Office on Youth and as director of planning at People Incorporated. Boone also served three terms on the Washington County School Board.
