Cierra Mudd’s life may look a little different than the average 28-year-olds.’ For Cierra, caring for others has always been a driving force in her life. “Caring for others has always been my passion” she said.
Cierra’s journey took an unexpected turn when she became the adoptive parent of her two-year-old great-niece, Ahlani. As Ahlani’s mother struggled with addiction, Cierra stepped in when Ahlani was just two weeks old. Cierra learned how to care for a newborn as she faced mounds of red tape to become Ahlani’s permanent caregiver. While all of this was happening, Cierra was continuing to care for her mother, who struggles with seizures and needed daily living assistance.

“I would do anything to help my family, I love them” she said.
However, adopting Ahlani came with its own challenges. Cierra had to demonstrate stable housing and provide a secure environment for her niece. Recognizing the need for support, Cierra turned to People Incorporated’s permanent supportive housing service, which offered housing services for her mother and ultimately referred Cierra to the Whole Family Approach pilot program.
Through the guidance of her Whole Family Approach coach, Cierra connected with a Certified Patient Care Technician training program, which aligned with her passion for caregiving. Cierra is grateful for the support and mentorship from her Whole Family Approach coach. “She’s been awesome. She motivates me,” said Cierra. “Whenever I need her, she’s right there.”

The Whole Family Approach didn’t stop at Cierra’s training program. She and her coach worked together to create a vision board and outline her five- and ten-year goals. Her coach provided essential resources and items for Ahlani, ensuring a supportive environment for her development.
This comprehensive and integrated approach entered Cierra’s life at the perfect time as she was juggling caring for her mother and working two jobs.
Prior to her certification as a Patient Care Technician, Cierra worked as a Patient Care Assistant, making ends meet but facing financial constraints. Now, with increased income from her new certification, she can better provide for Ahlani and assist her mother. The financial stability achieved through the program has even enabled Cierra to build up her savings and rent her own townhouse. “I don’t see it as work because I love what I do,” said Cierra. “It gives me fulfillment making others happy.”
Cierra’s inspiring journey doesn’t end here. She dreams of becoming a homeowner and building a secure future for herself and Ahlani. The trust and connection she developed with People Incorporated staff has been life changing. By having someone to call and trust, she now believes in endless possibilities for herself and her family.

Cierra aspires to pursue further education and gain certification as a medical assistant. With the continued guidance and support from People Incorporated’s Whole Family Approach program, Cierra is confident in her potential to achieve her dreams.
