Kyanna Johnson lives in Stafford, Virginia, with her mom, daughter, and stepfather. As a kid, Kyanna didn’t always feel like she had the support she needed to make good decisions. Eventually, Kyanna developed a drug problem. She was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison for robbery as a result, leaving behind her two-year-old daughter.
But Kyanna’s time in prison proved to be a turning point in her life. She used that time for personal growth, completing several educational and self-help programs. “I really tried to work on myself in prison and become a person that my daughter could be proud of,” said Kyanna.
It was after her release from prison that Kyanna connected with People Incorporated’s Virginia CARES program through her probation officer. She knew that to be successful after re-entering her community, she would need to have some type of career training.
Kyanna immediately felt welcomed by the Virginia CARES staff as she worked to build a new future for herself. “To come home and meet people that aren’t judging, that are really encouraging, that really made a difference,” said Kyanna.
With the help of Virginia CARES, Kyanna completed a commercial driver’s license (CDL) training program and secured full-time employment with the Virginia Department of Transportation. Funds from the Virginia CARES program were available to purchase Kyanna a new laptop that helped her in her job search. But most importantly, her re-entry coaches offered her unwavering support and motivation to reach her goals. “It just makes you feel like you have security and support with these people and this program,” said Kyanna.
Kyanna is now pursuing a degree in business administration and has her sights set on having a career in human resources, where she can use her experiences to positively impact the lives of other ex-offenders. “I would like for felons to be able to get more opportunities,” said Kyanna. “I want to be in a position that if I meet an ex-felon to be able to give them opportunities like people have given me. That’s all we want, is a chance to change and do better.”
Kyanna’s daughter is now 16 years old, and they are actively working on strengthening their relationship. College is on the horizon for her daughter, and they’ve spent time touring schools together.
Kyanna’s life is now filled with joy, sobriety, and success. She cherishes her role as a mother and is excited about what the future holds.
